Demonstrating the Value of Reading
Monday, March 2, 2009
GPS, in partnership with Chattanooga’s READ 20, sent drama teacher Catherine Bolden and her Marzians! Reader’s Theatre troupe to Normal Park Elementary for a Read Aloud Celebration on Monday, Mar. 2, the national Read Across America day sponsored by the National Education Association.

Made up of GPS and McCallie theatre students, members of the troupe read an interactive performance version of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham, and Mrs. Bolden’s latest E-Book release, The Marvelous Tale of Johnathon Bunderton’s Dragon, specifically written to celebrate the NEA’s Read Across America program. Now in its twelfth year, the NEA program focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to helping them to master basic skills.

The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, community centers, and more participate. GPS has participated in Read Across America activities for many years, becoming a leader in literacy initiatives for young readers.

“What a great opportunity this was for GPS and McCallie to join READ 20 and Read Across America,” said Bolden, a member of GPS’ fine arts faculty. “I think everyone should celebrate today. Find someone you love and read them a story!”

Today’s performers with the Marzians! were all stars of last year’s spring musical, The Wiz: Mary Beth Booker, Sarah Thomas, Natalie Pittman, and McCallie student Tate Ball. Mrs. Bolden’s Read Aloud E-Books for Families are available online through http://marzipanstudios.com/
