For a seventh grader, being asked to write 600-1000 words on any subject might be a little intimidating. But when Kit Turner and Charlotte Vance fulfilled those requirements for a local essay contest, they found the task easy, fun, and ultimately award-winning.

DAR Essay WinnersThe GPS seventh grade students entered the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Chickamauga Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and were awarded first and second place certificates for their efforts. The topic for the essay was “Pretend you are a boy or a girl during the American Revolution. Using historical facts, discuss how the war is affecting your life.”

Turner’s and Vance’s essays, which were judged on historical accuracy, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness, also included a bibliography of source material. They are students of Leland Strang, 7th grade American History teacher.

DAR Regent Lee Parham was on hand at a recent Middle School assembly to present the awards and ribbons. The NSDAR theme for 2013-2016 is “Honoring our Heritage – Focusing on the Future – Celebrating America.”
