Frances N. Wheeler

Longtime faculty member Frances N. Wheeler passed away on Friday, June 13, at the age of 92.  The only child of Nickie Harris and George Nelson, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Cecil Wheeler, and is survived by her son Phil, his wife Beverly, and their children Kristin Swiercek (Mike) and Gary Wheeler (Tiffany) and their children.

Frances worked as a substitute teacher by day and started college at the University of Chattanooga at the age of 32.  She continued her education by receiving a masters degree in education while teaching full time.  Frances retired after 28 years at GPS, where she taught ancient history and served as the student council advisor for seven years.  In the 1987 Kaleidoscope, she was decribed by L'Anne Street '87 as one who instilled "respect and dedication" to GPS. She enjoyed both the education and social interaction with all of her students.  She had a deep love for her family and was quick to give gifts to family, friends and strangers.

Four years ago Frances moved to Jacksonville to be with her family.  She lived at Riverside Presbyterian House where she enjoyed planned activities, bridge and knitting.

A visitation is planned for June 23 at 10 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the GPS Frances Wheeler Student Council Scholarship Fund or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. The obituary is posted online at Chattanoogan.com
