About Us

Girls Preparatory School, which celebrated its centennial year in 2005-06, is one of the largest secondary girls' day schools in the United States, enrolling 700 college-bound students in grades 6-12.

On a campus where a quality education is prized, GPS faculty members demonstrate an understanding of how girls learn and succeed. There is a special spirit among the GPS faculty of camaraderie, helpfulness, and going beyond what is expected. They know that an atmosphere of high expectations in a nurturing, supportive environment leads to competent and confident students. They know that collaborative activities often work better in all-girls' classrooms. They know that classrooms should be places where many student voices are heard and respected.

Students at Girls Preparatory School learn to speak for themselves in the classroom, speak for others as community volunteers, and speak for the values that they possess. Their leadership qualities are strengthened by membership in student clubs or activities or on an athletic team. In all settings, GPS girls are challenged to use their voices in constructive, individualized ways as they become mentors, activists, and leaders.

Resources include a superior fine arts department, 14 interscholastic sports, and over 60 student organizations. The school's wireless student-owned laptop program was the first of its kind in Tennessee's secondary schools. The character education program has received national recognition, and a coordinate program with the McCallie School provides coeducational classroom and extracurricular activities.

GPS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and holds membership in the National Association of Independent Schools and the National Coalition of Girls' Schools.
