At Girls Preparatory School, classes in the Fine Arts offer students a creative process that can be their foundation for any productive endeavor, whether it's original choreography, a science project or a writing assignment in English. At GPS, arts education is seen as an essential part of the whole curriculum, incorporating opportunities to explore artistic mediums of expression and to develop critical thinking skills that are important for any well educated person. Believing in the importance of a fine arts education, the school boasts an award-winning fine arts faculty and the largest array of offerings in the region in both visual and performing arts. Students are mentored as they develop in both their technique and creative expression.
With graduation requirements in the visual and performing arts, GPS offers sequential coursework and performance opportunities in drawing, painting, ceramics, graphic design, dance, drama, musical theatre, technical theatre, orchestral music and vocal music. By the time a student leaves the Middle School, she has enjoyed a range of classes in each art form.
The Fine Arts faculty is committed to the belief that the arts are not only a window to the soul but a window to cultures around the world and a necessary resource for developing the critical thought that leads to bright ideas.
A growing number of GPS alumnae are working coast to coast in careers in the arts, in musical and dramatic performances, as curators for museum and gallery exhibits, as filmmakers, in architecture, and in other art-related fields.
