Performing Arts

GPS offers very strong coursework and performance opportunities in dance, drama, musical theatre, orchestral music and vocal music. The curriculum promotes exploration in each of these art forms at the middle and upper school levels. Both technique and improvisation are taught along the way so that students gain mastery and develop creativity at the same time.

 

 

Ideas in Motion

 

 

GPS dance has historically been a model program for dance education throughout the country. With three beautiful dance studios, our program is designed to prepare the advanced dancer for the rigors of a college dance department and also allow the inexperienced to 'discover dance' and advance quickly in both skill and creativity.

 

Dance ensembles give extra performance experience and training beyond the classroom. Terpsichord, our renowned contemporary dance company creates and performs three major concerts a year.

 

 

Acting Out

 

 

Theatre arts in the Middle School gives every interested student who wants to perform or work backstage a chance to try. The program allows for high energy, fun performances while teaching a professional, time-management work ethic developmentally appropriate for middle school learners. Theatre Arts courses focus on creative games, critical thinking, and successful teamwork.

 

The Upper School program operates as a pre-professional theatre company with three major productions each year: a Mainstage Drama, three Winter One-Acts, and a musical in the spring. McCallie School students participate in each.

 

 

Making Music

 

 

With one of the largest performance-aimed orchestral programs in the area, as well as offerings of wind ensemble and beginning winds and percussion class, students can choose from a variety of music activities to pursue their musical interest. GPS also offers many extracurricular music activities and participates actively in Junior and Senior Clinics each year. Private lessons are taught at GPS by distinguished local musicians for the convenience of busy schedules, arranged by teachers individually in the applied lessons program.

 

 

Vocal music is another exciting program at GPS with Middle School Choir often singing with their counterparts from McCallie. Under the tutelage of an Emmy Award-winning singer, this group of students is becoming one of the top choral groups in the area. At the upper school level, advanced singers have many opportunities to perform with Glee Club, Candlelight Choir, or Chamber Singers with McCallie School students.
