Meet the College Counseling Staff

Susan McCarter
An educator for nearly 40 years, Susan McCarter has been the Director of College Counseling at GPS since 1998. She has been active in several professional organizations and served as the president of Southern Association for College Admissions Counseling in 2016 and 2017. In 2007, she received the Larry West Award for outstanding leadership in admission counseling, the highest distinction given by SACAC. Additionally, she has served on several college advisory boards and the NACAC finance committee and has presented at multiple regional and national conferences. Prior to GPS, McCarter was an English teacher in the Hamilton County Schools District and was the Director of Coordinate Programs at GPS and McCallie. She received a degree in English Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Amelia Mann
Amelia Mann has worked in education for more than 20 years. She earned her B.S. from Appalachian State University and a M.Ed. from The College of William and Mary in educational policy, planning, and leadership. For more than 10 years, Mann fulfilled various roles in Florida State University’s office of admissions, most recently as associate director overseeing recruitment and the application review of domestic and international freshman and transfer applicants. She has served in a number of volunteer capacities within the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling, most notably as co-chair and faculty member for the Summer Seminar program, a week-long training program for new college counselors. Mann has had positions as a college counselor in two other independent schools prior to coming to GPS.
