Ready for the Next Step

For GPS girls, the relationships formed with the college guidance office transform the experience into three words:
individualizedpurposeful, and personal.
The process begins freshman year in small group meetings focused on the student, not the college. As a sophomore, the student is encouraged to evaluate her personal story as it relates to academics and extracurricular choices. Juniors meet individually with the college counseling staff and, with their peers, in seven college classes, fine-tuning what will be their approach to the college search. Applications, scholarship opportunities, preparation for the high school-to-college transition, and increased individual attention from the counselors are part of the personalized strategy that fills the senior year.

Parent partnerships are part of the college journey as well. In addition to interviews with families, the counselors plan many events and touchpoints such as college fairs, evening programs about financial aid and athletic scholarships, Cup O’ College, a morning coffee event open to any parent with questions about the process; and newsletters with information about test prep, financial aid, college visits, and summer opportunities.
