Story

Music to your ears.

Through thoughtful instruction, collaborative ensembles, and inspiring performance opportunities, students deepen their musical talents while building confidence and creativity that resonate far beyond the stage.

Being a part of GPS’s vocal music department has been a highlight of my high school experience thus far. Through this department, I have been able to explore my voice, build my confidence, and be a part of a supportive community." Josie J '27

Last year, alongside McCallie, GPS Singers were among a larger chorus performing selections in Carol Barnett's "The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass." They were joined by other singers from New York, Iowa, North Carolina and Kansas, as well as the Nashville Symphony Chorus, led by Tucker Biddlecombe, the guest conductor.

Meet Faculty

One of the things I want to do is find opportunities for our students to get out and perform and really get to make an impact, not only in the local community, but in the larger community as well.Emily Tousek '01, Choral Director

Music Opportunities

Below is a sample of opportunities available. Classes may change due to student interest.

Exploring Music

Students listen to classical composers for form and style; learn the basics of playing symphonic instruments in the string, woodwind, brass and percussion families; and learn to sing the traditional GPS songs along with studying the fundamentals of music, including reading and writing rhythms and interval recognition.

Middle School Orchestra

Students of all experience levels are welcome to play the violin, viola, cello, and string bass. Repertoire will range from beginning to intermediate pieces

Middle School Choir

In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students will learn music reading and sight-singing skills.

Middle School Band

Beginning- to experienced-students of flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion/drums will improve their music reading ability, learn multiple 5-note patterns, scales and master beginning rhythm techniques.

Senior Orchestra

This coordinate performance ensemble is open to all music students playing symphonic instruments—string, wind, or percussion (including piano). The repertoire is based on the great classical and modern literature.

AP Music Theory

A college-level course that takes an in-depth look into music and how it is put together.

Symphonic Ensemble

In Symphonic Ensemble, orchestra and band unite for a dynamic musical experience. Students explore diverse repertoire, develop technical skills, and strengthen teamwork through rehearsals and performances.

GPS Singers

The premiere performance-based choral ensemble for students grades 9-12, this class emphasizes vocal technique that can be applied individually and for ensemble purposes. Techniques developed will improve the overall ensemble sound and include, but are not limited to, tone quality, balance, blend, proper vowel production, and correct diction; students will explore advanced music reading and sight-singing skills.
