Three GPS Seniors Receive National Merit Semifinalist Recognition
Students to advance in scholarship competition.
Last fall, members of the Class of 2023 took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Each year, more than 1.3 million students take the test nationwide, with approximately 50,000 recognized for their academic potential based on their test scores.
Of those recognized for their impressive performances, 34,000 are named Commended Students, while the remaining 16,000 are named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists who vye to be among 7,250 finalists.
Today we recognized three GPS seniors for their high scores. Please help us in congratulating Rowan Espy, Meghan Gardner, and Anisha Phade.
“We are incredibly proud of these three representatives of the senior class for not only their dedication to their studies but also their service to their school,” said Megan Cover, Head of School. “While this recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is well deserved, Rowan, Meghan, and Anisha are also examples of honorable students in their actions and deeds.”
Rowan Espy is a member of Environmental Club and Partnerships in the Community; she serves as co-president of Terpsichord and won the Fletcher Bright Fellowship for the Arts. Meghan Gardner is a member of Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society) and co-president of Science Club; outside of school, she is a shodan in Five Animal Kenpo (first-degree black belt) and plays classical guitar. Anisha Phade is a member of the varsity rowing team, Model UN, and SWENext and was awarded the Grace McCallie Scholarship this year; she also serves as an Admission Ambassador.
Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent fewer than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.
Semifinalists continue on to compete for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships for 2023. To become a Finalist, they will have to submit a detailed scholarship application that includes information about their academic successes, extracurricular pursuits, leadership abilities, and more.
