Bowling Wins Region, Again

GPS bowlers won the Division II Region title for the sixth consecutive year.
The varsity bowling team won its 6th straight regional championship title by defeating Pope John Paul II at the Smyrna Bowling Center on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and heads back to Smyrna on Thursday, Jan. 19, to vie for the individual and team state title.
In the region competition, the Bruisers won their first game 7-1, with a team score of 773. Tia Kemp led the team with a score of 160. It was the second game in which the bowlers secured the regional title with an 868 pinfall and an 8-0 win to update the score 15-1 and secure the 14 points needed to close out the match. Kemp led again with 208; Emily Large added 148, and Macie Stanfield, 139.

In the third game, a few more Bruiser bowlers were involved through substitutions, contributing to the 835 pinfall and a 6-2 point total to take the region match 23-4. Blakely Reid led with 161, Kemp added 152, Emma Prostko added 146, and Emmie Cobb, 144.

The team was able to bring home the trophy with only one returning starter from last year's team, senior Blakely Reid, who is a finalist for the Div. II Miss Bowler award. Head Coach David McGowan notes this heightens the team's success that much more. "The young players have improved as much as any team I have ever coached," Coach McGowan said.
