And They're Off!!

Winterim 2017 offers trips to Nashville, Disney, and Huntsville, as well as day adventures in Chattanooga and the surrounding area.
Winterim 2017 started Monday, Feb. 13, with an array of classes and trips meant to pique interests and delve into subjects not offered in the regular curriculum. Yes, most of the senior class boarded a bus for Disney World, but other students packed bags for Huntsville's Space Camp. This “out-of-this-world” opportunity includes astronaut training simulators such as the Multi-Axis Trainer which simulates a tumble spin during reentry or the 1/6th Chair which simulates what it is like to walk on the Moon's surface. A history of the U.S. space program is also part of the offering.

Day trips include Art Road Fever, a visit to the Frist Center for the Arts in Nashville and many galleries in both Tennessee’s capital city and Chattanooga; and Red, White, and YOU!, a trip to Nashville to meet with Governor Haslam and observe the TN Supreme Court in action. Subsequent days for this joint trip of GPS and Brainerd High School students shift focus to Hamilton County government, City of Chattanooga government, and Federal District Courts.

Back in Chattanooga and the surrounding area, girls are working with Eastside Elementary students, building a Zen garden, taking a course in film history, exploring the craft of nature journaling, and learning to knit, cook, and live within a balanced budget.

One unique Winterim experience is Brand U, in which girls will spend four days exploring different career fields and developing their personal brands. They will learn how to conduct an informational interview, dress for success, create an elevator pitch, work a room and develop their on-line professional presence.

Day hikes on the Cumberland Plateau or a hiking/biking tour of historic sites associated with the Appalachian Mountains are popular with the outdoor minded.

For some students, Winterim 2017 is their first exploration of what the Chattanooga art scene offers. For others, it is a physical challenge of outdoor adventure. For all participants, Winterim is a realization of what it means to be a lifelong learner.
