Almost Alumnae, Seniors Enjoy Final Banquet

At the annual Senior Banquet, the Class of 2017 enjoyed a dinner of GPS Dining Hall favorites, a retrospective of their years as Bruisers, and a welcome to the alumnae sisterhood.
Several traditions were in evidence at the Senior Banquet on Wednesday, May 17. The senior class, attired once more in their May Day dresses, was applauded by faculty and staff; a standing ovation was given to the Dining Hall staff for a meal of their favorites like poppy seed chicken, and they were welcomed as alumnae into a sisterhood like no other.

Before the dinner began, guests enjoyed a slideshow of photos from sixth grade through the years. Erin Sizemore, Senior Class Dean, welcomed everyone and reminded the girls that “in less than 48 hours, you will have GPS diplomas!” Blessing the meal and the seniors, Math teacher Diane Walker reminded them that their last meal together at GPS was also their first meal as part of the alumnae sisterhood. “Remember the comfort, love, and guidance you received in our hallways,” she said. “Draw strength from your class ring, and know that GPS has prepared you well.”

Reintroducing a tradition from many years ago, Head of School Dr. Autumn Graves presented each senior with a bound book of the Chapel Talks given through the year by their classmates, and Director of Alumnae Relations Katherine Betts presented each girl with an elegantly designed poster featuring the words to the school's Alma Mater.

After dinner, Linda Mines, the retiring chair of the history department who was selected by the seniors to reminisce on their years as Bruisers, gave what she called “the grand tour” of their GPS careers. Mines celebrated each senior for her accomplishments and activities. “As your faces have matured, your hearts have filled with service,” she said. “You share optimism, boundless potential, and deep bonds of friendship.

“You will reflect light onto the world,” Mines said, “and it is an honor to exit – stage right – with you!”
