Six Seniors Named 2018 National Merit Scholarship Commended Students

Classmates join others in national scholar recognition
Head of School Dr. Autumn Graves attended Chapel yesterday to announce that six GPS seniors were named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Mary Brown, Ashley-Rose Lynn, Mary Catherine Marsden, Margaret Marshall, Ritika Modi, and Elizabeth Welborn joined Dr. Graves on stage to receive their commendations.

Among the more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers. This places our six students, as well as the four named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists, among the top 3 percent in the nation, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the GPS Class of 2018.

In a letter to the school, National Merit Scholarship Corporation stated: “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.”
