2018 May Court and Queen Announced

The 2018 GPS May Court and Queen is announced during all-school assembly Friday, December 8.
Senior Phoebe Mills will reign as May Queen over the 2017-18 traditional May Day festivities, to be held Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Six classmates join Phoebe on the court: Hollis Gaffney, Raegan Lamb, Margaret Lim, Meg Marshall, Meher Memon, and Libby Welborn. After the court is announced to the student body and faculty in the all-school assembly, votes cast by all students bestow the honor of May Queen to Phoebe Mills, and a second vote names Hollis Gaffney as Maid of Honor.

Earlier in the week, the seniors voted for the May Court by selecting classmates who best represent their class and our school and the ideals and values we hold dear by considering the following criteria: The May Queen and Court should be representatives of the senior class in the highest sense. They should be gracious, friendly, and loyal to friends and to GPS. They should be actively and enthusiastically involved in the life of GPS, eager to give of their time and their talents. They should stand for the highest ideals of character and integrity. They should be respected and admired by fellow school mates and faculty alike. When voting for the May Queen and Maid of Honor, students are asked to consider the same criteria.

Dr. Autumn Graves, Head of School, says, “Each of the seven members of the 2018 May Court has made her unique impact and contribution to our community during her time at GPS and embodies the qualities expected of the court. To see them represent many different interests, strengths, and accomplishments while receiving the honor of being chosen to May Court—the highest honor a girl can receive during her career at GPS—is to see our school’s mission and values being lived out.”

Phoebe Mills, May Queen
Phoebe is a member of the National Honor Society and a 2017 AP Scholar, and she has also won the national French exam. Where the radiant—as defined by her peers—Phoebe shines the brightest, however, is in her art. A talented and versatile artist, Phoebe is a member of Terpsichord, our modern dance company, and has participated in McCallie/GPS Candlelight, McCallie’s holiday musical concert, all four years of Upper School. President of the National Art Honor Society, she has been featured in the professional art exhibit of Townsend Atelier and earned an Honorable Mention at the local Palette 2 Palette art exhibit. Finding beauty and meaning in all she creates and everyone she meets, Phoebe embodies kindness, support, inspiration, and light. Phoebe has attended GPS since sixth grade and previously attended Normal Park Museum Magnet.

Hollis Gaffney, Maid of Honor
A two-sport athlete, Hollis is a four-year member and invaluable asset to both the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams and will serve as the team captain of the lacrosse team this spring. Her effervescent spirit fuels her teammates and those around her. A member of GyPsieS, the school spirit club; Peer Power, a student-led mentorship club of juniors and seniors who mentor seventh and eighth graders; a leader of GPS/McCallie Young Life Wyldlyfe; and a representative for Student Council for the past three years, Hollis pours her time and heart into our school and her peers. She is also a member of the Beta Club and Spectrum, the school newspaper. A graduate of Bright School, Hollis started GPS in sixth grade.

Raegan Lamb, Left Train Bearer
Highly respected by her class, Raegan was elected as Chairwoman of the Class Leadership Council both her junior and senior years. A friend and sister to all, Raegan is adored by her peers for her affable nature. Raegan has brought the same kindness and joy to her teammates and coach as a four-year varsity cheerleader. Unafraid of a crowd on the sidelines or on the stage, she was a cast member in recent GPS/McCallie theater productions: Legally Blonde, Grapes of Wrath, and Pippin. Raegan is also a member of Girl Scouts, Cultural Diversity Club, Christian Forum, GPS Ambassadors, and Beta Club. She started GPS in sixth grade after attending Chickamauga Elementary School.

Meg Marshall, Crown Bearer

She is also a 2017 AP Scholar with Distinction. Meg joined us at GPS her ninth-grade year after attending Signal Mountain Middle School.

Meher Memon, Lady of the Court
Meher is a 2017 AP Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, and recipient of the Freshman Cup. She is a four-year Student Council representative and member of Model UN—serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Press Corps at this year’s conference. A multi-year member of Amnesty International, she is currently the Director of Campaigns for the school’s chapter. When asked to describe Meher, her peers chose “earnest” and mentioned how much they respect her. She is devoted and intentional in all she does and invests her time in causes and activities that matter deeply to her. Meher attended Bright School before beginning her GPS career in sixth grade.

Margaret Lim, Right Train Bearer
Margaret, described by her peers as brilliant, is exactly that. Her academic accomplishments and interests include: 2017 AP Scholar with Honor, a 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, recipient of the Duffy Jarnigan and Grace McCallie scholarships, and member of SWENext, Science Olympiad, Computer Science Club, Beta Club, and National Honor Society. Margaret started GPS in sixth grade after graduating from Bright School.

Libby Welborn, Scepter Bearer
The President of the Honor Council and a class representative her junior year, Libby represents honor and integrity in the highest sense. She maintains our honor system while encouraging and guiding students to lead honorable lives as the leader in one of the most respected and important roles of our school.
