Kate Schlegel Signs to NCAA Division III School

GPS standout to compete at The College of Wooster this fall.
GPS swim team captain Kate Schlegel signs a national letter of intent to swim for the Fighting Scots this fall at The College of Wooster (Wooster, Ohio). Schlegel swims the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races.

“There was never a doubt we’d get here,” says Varsity Swim Coach John Woods, of Schlegel’s decision to swim in college. “It was just a matter of what shirt she would be wearing. She maintains a great tradition of GPS swimming and diving, where our students go on to compete in college.”

Schlegel not only amassed impressive stats while swimming for the Bruisers, but she also was voted by her teammates as winner of the Bruiser Award for the past two years for being the ideal teammate. She won a leadership award this year and was a three-time state championship qualifier.

Schlegel swam as a kid but didn’t really commit to the sport until enrolling at GPS her freshman year. “GPS and Coach Woods really set me on the path to be able to swim in college,” she says.

“She’s always been a great example to all of us of perseverance and how you should handle yourself in workouts, at meets, and as a teammate,” Woods says. “ I know that she will carry on and the coach of the FIghting Scots will be just as lucky as I was to have a great person on the team like Kate who is a committed athlete.”

GPS Athlete Director Jay Watts says Schlegel is not only a talented athlete who excelled in the pool, but also a leader who contributed to the school’s program in a number of other ways. “We are proud of Kate and all that she was able to accomplish during her career at GPS,” he says. “We wish her nothing but the best at Wooster.”

Schlegel plans to study archeology and art history and chose Wooster because of the research opportunities the school offers in addition to athletic pursuits.
