Murfee Jones Signs Intent to Run for the Generals

NCAA Division III Washington and Lee University offers Jones a spot on next year’s team.
GPS standout student-athlete Murfee Jones signs a national letter of intent to run for Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

“Murfee has been one of the most valuable members of the GPS track and field team for the past four seasons,” says Jeff Gaither, Head Varsity Track & Field Coach. “She has distinguished herself by matching the school record in the pole vault (10’), excelling in the 300 hurdles, and contributing on many relay teams.”

Coach Gaither says her versatility on the track is a testament to her overall athleticism, but most importantly, Murfee has been an outstanding, supportive teammate. “She has certainly left her mark with the GPS track and field team, and we wish her much success as she continues her track career at W&L.”

Jones applied to Washington and Lee University early decision, the school her older brother Jack attended. A multi-talented athlete, Jones is on the swim team, cheered on Blue Crew, and also ran cross country. She’s been a member of the track and field team since her eighth-grade year, amassing three state medals and running every relay offered. She and her teammates will compete in the upcoming state meet.

“We are so proud of Murfee and all the she has contributed to our program at GPS,” says Jay Watts, Athletic Director. “Washington and Lee is fortunate to have her coming on board in the fall. We look forward to following Murfee's story in college."
