Announcing Our Commended Students from the Class of 2020

Five seniors named to National Merit Scholarship Program
This week GPS was notified that five from the Class of 2020 received commended recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program: Astra Burke, Alex Center, Jadyn Matthews, Meg Priest, and Leightta Sherrill.

Of the 1.6 million students who take the PSAT their junior year, some 50,000 with the highest scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In late September, approximately two-thirds (about 34,000) of these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as a Commended Student.

"Each of these five seniors represents her class and her school quite well," says Dr. Autumn A. Graves, Head of School. "She not only shines academically, she is a leader, a mentor to her younger GPS sisters, a friend to her peers. We could not be more proud of these students and are pleased to be able to share in the celebration of their accomplishment."

Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states.

Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit
Scholarships, some students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
