GPS Students Dazzle at National French Week Competition
Juniors Mia Iannios and Emma Dexter awarded first place.
GPS students in Mr. Guernsey’s Honors French II, French III/Honors French III, and Honors French IV classes spent several weeks working to create videos for a regional competition hosted by the French-American Chamber of Commerce.
As part of its programming for National French Week (November 4-8), the FACC invited area high school French programs to participate in the competition which prompted students to create short, infomercial-style videos on specific French regions or overseas departments to encourage people to visit the region. All dialogue and narration had to be in French.
Students in each of Guernsey’s classes selected one video from the class to be submitted to the FACC competition. The three videos from GPS included “Martinique” by Caroline Stafford ‘21 and Riley Archambault ‘23 from Honors French II, “Bourgogne France-Comté” by Ally Daniel ‘22, Samantha Williams ‘22, and Katie Kraus ‘22 from French III, and “Mayotte” by Mia Iannios ‘21 and Emma Dexter ‘21 from Honors French IV.
“The girls really put a lot of work into the project. I could only send three videos on to the FACC competition, but really any of the videos would have merited consideration,” says Guernsey.
On November 4, all video entries were screened at Adelle's Crêperie and judged by representatives from the FACC. Finalists were then selected and moved on to the final round; among the finalists was Mia’s and Emma’s video on Mayotte!
In the final round, Mia and Emma's video was named the top entry from GPS, and went on to tie for first place in the competition. Mr. Guernsey gushed on the girls, saying they “did a wonderful job of representing GPS and our French program within the local Chattanooga community!”
