Fun Things to Do Over Spring Break: Middle School Edition

Head of Middle School, class deans, and Middle School Dean of Students curate a fun list of stay-at-home activities.
The Great Outdoors
  • Pack a picnic and have lunch in your own backyard!
  • Build a backyard obstacle course and challenge your family to race through as fast as they can.
  • Walk around your neighborhood and take photos of blooming trees and flowers. Then make a slideshow and then send it to your art teacher.
  • Challenge yourself to run/walk/bike at least one mile every day.
  • Start a garden. Order seeds online, plant them in small pots to start with, and then watch them grow!
  • Go camping in the backyard. Make a star finder and look for as many constellations as you can find!
  • Wash your parents’ car or volunteer to do some other chores outside in the sun and fresh air.
  • Ask an adult to show you how to change a tire. Or, watch here to learn how! (But do NOT do this without the help of an adult!)

Indoor Fun and Excitement
  • Spring cleaning: Go through closets and get rid of (or prepare to donate!) anything you haven’t used or worn in a year.
  • Write thank-you letters to your UPS/USPS drivers, your teachers, or a family member or friend who you have not seen in a while.
  • Fill out a foster home application for McKamey or The Humane Society, volunteering to foster an animal until they are ready for adoption.
  • Play board games and dust off those old puzzles. Or, find a deck of cards or dice and invent your own game!
  • Bake bread: Find some great recipes online and make your house smell so good. Like sweets? Time to put those Pinterest recipes to work.
  • Visit Chef Brad’s site, Chattachef Kitchen, to learn how to make some of his great recipes!
  • Pick a book to read, and then watch the movie. Which did you like better: the book or movie? Some ideas include Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Little Women, Wonder, A Wrinkle in Time, Eragon, Matilda, and Holes.
  • Paint a portrait of your dog, cat, lizard, hedgehog, or other beloved pet; send it to Mrs. Brock or Mrs. Glasscock.
  • Get three months of free guitar lessons from Fender.

Virtual Visits and Experiences
  • Love computer science? Brush up on your coding skills at Code.org or create stories, games, and animations at scratch.mit.edu.
  • Take a virtual field trip to these five National Parks: Kenai Fjords National Park (Alaska), Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (Hawaii), Carlsbad Caverns National Park (New Mexico), Bryce Canyon National Park (Utah), or Dry Tortugas National Park (Florida).
