The GPS
Dress Code
The GPS uniform serves as a unifying symbol of the student and alumnae community both internally and externally. Wearing the uniform as it is designed and intended should be a point of pride for a GPS girl.
GPS students dress and present themselves within the guidelines below. Students who are missing components of the uniform will be required to purchase them from the Bow, Golden Buckle or Division Office. Charges will be billed to the student's FACTS account.

A complete uniform includes
- solid-colored GPS dress
- GPS leather belt with buckle
- black, tied grosgrain ribbon bow (width of ¼ or ⅜ inch)
- school-appropriate shoes that are safe and intended for public wear (e.g., not house shoes or slippers). Open-toed footwear should not be worn in the science lab, gym, or weight room.
- shorts or other undergarment (not visible below the dress) or leggings (see guidelines below)

Uniform Expectations
- Skirt and dress length at the fingertips or longer, even when wearing outerwear or backpack
- Uniform items should not be cut, embellished, or modified/altered in other ways that change the original design.
- Hair of a natural shade
- No hats
- If worn, tights or leggings should be fitted to the ankle.
- If worn, tights, knee socks, or leggings should be solid black, white, gray, or navy and free of mesh, cutouts, holes, tears, or see-through sections.
- If worn, crew or ankle socks may be any solid color

Outerwear
GPS-branded sweatshirts and jackets can be worn with the uniform within the following guidelines:
- Crewneck sweatshirts, sweaters, hooded sweatshirts, quarter-zip sweatshirts, and zip-up jackets shorter than the uniform
- Produced by The Bow, GPS athletics, or GPS fine and performing arts
- Can be gray, white, black, or blue, with graphics in black, white or blue
- GPS gear that does not meet all of these criteria should not be worn with the uniform during the school day.
- Juniors and seniors may wear the junior sweatshirt created by their class.
- The uniform should still be visible under all outerwear.
- As an earned privilege at the discretion of the Dean of Students or Division Head, seniors may be allowed to wear college sweatshirts at a specified time during the second semester.

Dress-Down Days
- Dress-down days allow students to come to school out of uniform, and they may be granted to one group (such as one grade level) or to all students. Dress-down days will be announced in advance via morning announcements and email communication.
- Clothing coverage on dress-down days should be comparable to the uniform, including no crop tops, and fingertip-length shorts and skirts.
- Each athletic team, the cast and crew of the upper school fall play and spring musical, Terpsichord, and other student groups that participate in competitions or performances will be granted one designated dress down day to celebrate their hard work and dedication.
- Each group should dress in a uniform manner (e.g., all wearing warm-ups, all wearing the same color, etc.) that demonstrates their pride in what they have accomplished as a team or ensemble.
- The Director of Athletics, the Director of Fine and Performing Arts, and the Dean of Students will provide written guidelines for attire.
ID BADGe
A student is expected to have her ID badge to access doors, gates, and printers. Upper school students should also have ID badges for attendance purposes.
Additional Guidelines
Note that visible tattoos, large facial jewelry, septum jewelry, and oral jewelry are not allowed with the uniform, when representing GPS (such as in school athletic or arts events), or at school socials.
The Division Head or Dean of Students has the discretion to deem tattoos, accessories, and hair color appropriate for school. Questions about clothing, footwear, accessories, hair color, or tattoos should be directed to the Dean of Students.
