Please see the below note from GPS Director of Enrollment and and Head of Middle School Katie Outlaw regarding the implementation of our new Middle School Admission Assessment:
No, the assessment is free of charge, offered on GPS’s campus on November 9 and December 14. Check-in will take place between 8:15 – 8:30 a.m. Please follow signs for parking and the location for checking in.
You can register your child by clicking HERE. When registering, you will have the option to indicate if you would like your daughter’s scores sent to another school. If you need assistance with registration, please contact our Admission Office at (423) 634-7644. Registration for the assessment will close 48 hours before the test date.
Overall, the Admission Assessment will take 90–100 minutes. Each of the three sections are roughly 30 minutes, and we’ll incorporate some brief breaks between each section. With the assessment beginning at 9 a.m., we expect pick-up to take place around 11 a.m.
Prospective students won’t need to bring anything to the assessment. We’ll provide pencils and paper for everyone. We recommend having your child eat breakfast that morning and, if they’d like, bring a water bottle to drink during breaks.
Yes, we are able to provide most accommodations that are currently being offered to your child. Please contact the Admission Office (admission@gps.edu) with more information on registering your child to receive accommodations for the Admission Assessment.
The assessment consists of grade-appropriate Math, Reading, and Writing questions based on national standards and previous standardized testing prompts.
There is no need to do any “test prep” for the Admission Assessment. The material on the assessment is grade-level material based on national standards.
No, the assessment is paper-based, with the Math & Reading multiple choice questions answered on a Scantron answer sheet, and the Writing section written in the booklet. Our proctors will collect the assessment packet and Scantron answer sheet from everyone.
Your child should do their best to answer the questions they feel most confident about initially and then return to any question(s) they were unsure of to make an educated guess. There is no benefit to leaving a question blank.
No, similar to other requirements in the Admission Checklist, we use the assessment only as an internal measure and do not share the results. If there are any important findings from the assessment, the Admission department will reach out to discuss with you individually.
While we do not recommend taking the assessment multiple times, please contact your Admission counselor if you feel as though your child will need to retake the assessment.
Relax! Remember, the Admission Assessment is merely one puzzle piece in a much larger picture that considers an applicant’s grades, academic ability & potential, character, extra-curricular involvement, etc. We certainly don’t aim to stress anyone out; however, it is also important for us to gather as much information as possible to make the most informed decisions.
