GPS Finishes Second at 2023 TISCA State Meet

The Bruisers close the meet with 204.5 team points; Baylor holds onto sixth place with 153.
GPS Swimming and Diving capped off a successful winter season with a second-place finish at the 2023 TISCA State Meet last weekend in Knoxville. The Bruisers finished the meet with 204.5 team points. Only Ensworth had a better team score in the final standings. The point total for GPS at this year’s championship was almost 30 points better than last year’s total of 175 that also netted the Bruisers a runner-up finish.

The strength of the Bruisers’ performance at the meet can be found in the depth of the overall roster. While no single swimmer or diver finished first in an individual event, GPS was able to amass points with nine different athletes scoring in 10 different events over the two-day competition. The Bruisers started off the race strong with a second-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, a performance that netted 34 team points after a final time of 1:45.54.

After the relay, GPS started stacking up points in the individual events with seven athletes finishing in the top 10 in six different events. Frances Bohner was sixth in the 200 Free (1:55.48) with teammate Millie Sharplin less than a second off her pace in that event, finishing 10th. Keller Williamson captured sixth place in the 200 IM (2:06.69) with Scout Chapin just five hundredths of a second behind her in seventh. Adelaide Bond had a time of 24.40 in the 50 Free, finishing 10th. Chapin scored again for the Bruisers with a seventh-place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke and Williamson picked up the bronze with a third-place mark in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:04.32).

In the diving competition, a strong group of competitors from GPS collected 21 total points with Alex Brumley leading the pack in eighth. Of the three divers who scored in the meet, Brumley and teammate Aleah Lusk, are freshmen; Sadie Reynolds is a sophomore. This gives the Bruisers a lot of optimism heading into next year.

GPS finished strong in the final relays on Saturday as the Bruisers finished fourth in the 200 Free Relay (1:37.95) and fifth in the 400 Free Relay (3:34.42). Senior Keller Williamson, who was part of the 200 Medley and 200 Free Relays for GPS, ended the day as the top scorer for GPS with 29 points in individual events. Chapin ended the day with 24 individual points and was part of her school’s 200 Medley and 400 Free Relays.
