Kathryn Outlaw, Head of Middle School; Director of Academic Support Services

Kathryn Outlaw came to GPS in 2017 after a 13-year career in Hamilton County Schools as a licensed school psychologist. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and an education specialist degree in school psychology from the University of Tennessee. She is currently completing a certificate in school management and leadership through a joint program from Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Business School. A native of Memphis, Kathryn attended the day school St. Agnes Academy for Girls.
Kathryn has served in many roles during her tenure at GPS—learning specialist, department chair and, most recently, Middle School Dean of Students. She has served as head coach for the varsity cross country and middle school track teams, leading the varsity cross country team to a state championship title in 2020.

Her passion for working on behalf of and advocating for students with learning differences led to her overseeing GPS support services, where she works closely with Deans of Health & Wellness and Teaching & Learning and the school nurse. In this role, Kathryn serves as a visionary for the program, assuring its interdisciplinary nature, developmentally appropriate curriculum, and connection to the needs of the students. Her role serves our community well as it relates to best practices in student support and health and wellness, a major focus of our strategic plan.

Known for her professionalism and care, Kathryn understands and appreciates the many facets that encompass an all-girls independent school experience, especially the importance of connection. “Relationships are the core of my success as an educator, and I thrive on the energy and curiosity that middle school girls bring to school each day,” she says.

Outside of school, Kathryn spends time running the roads and trails all over Chattanooga with her husband and two dogs. Her daughter, Ava, is a member of the GPS Class of 2027, and her stepson is a member of the McCallie Class of 2024.
