Golf Third at State; Soccer Wins Baylor Match

Golf's third-place finish at state and soccer's region win over Baylor kept fans' spirits high during Spirit Week.
Two exciting finishes to two varsity sporting events made for a fun Tuesday, Sept. 27, at GPS and carried over into Wednesday’s start of school.

A trio of Bruiser golfers tied for third at the TSSAA Division II-AA state golf tournament, matching their third-place finish at last year’s tournament. Junior McKenzie Frizzell finished the tournament in 8th place. “I was very proud of her having a score (163) like that in a strong field,” said Coach Rob Riddle. Frizzell’s score was tallied with classmate Hannah Prescott to give GPS a total 334 and a tie with fellow girls school Harpeth Hall. Senior Scottie Sandlin was the third member of the Bruiser team.

Two varsity soccer players celebrated their birthdays in a 2-1 win over Baylor at GPS. Junior Lily Hopping scored for the Bruisers, and sophomore Myra Brock was recognized by Coach Patrick Winecoff as one of three standouts for the winning team, the others being Samantha Jackson and Emily Large. Sophomore Lane Lawrence scored the other goal for GPS and added one of two assists. Fullback-midfielder Sara Corum provided the other assist and said she thinks the team “is building strong toward the end of the year.” Avery Campbell recorded four saves. Click here for the Times Free Press game story and photos.

The Bruisers, who won the state title in 2014 and reached the semifinal in 2015, are 3-0-2 in Division II-AA’s East/Middle region. Thanks to the GPS and McCallie fans who turned out to cheer the Bruisers. The photo below shows their sideline presence...there's a soccer player or two in the photo as well!
