Seven are Nat'l Merit Commended

Seven seniors received recognition by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Commended Students.
Seven more members of the GPS senior class have been honored by the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Including the five previously announced semifinalists, a total of 12 girls have received National Merit recognition, 17% of the class.

Emily Ballentine, Katie Brandao, Jennifer Brockman, Sarah Goodrich (not pictured), Kate McVay, Anna Shaw, and Delaney Swann were recently cheered by the student body for being recognized as Commended Students, having placed in the top of more than 1.5 million now-seniors who entered the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT in their junior year.

The girls received letters of commendation citing them for “outstanding potential for academic success.” Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses, according to a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

The Commended Students have “demonstrated outstanding potential,” said a NMSC spokesperson in a letter to Jenise Gordon, Head of the GPS Upper School. “We have great respect for the important part that you and your professional staff play in the development of academically talented young people.”
