Softball Sweeps in Nashville and Downs Central at Home

Homeruns, strikeouts, and game-ending plays were all present in the softball team's dominant week of play.
The softball Bruisers traveled to Nashville the first weekend of April for a trio of games against Middle Tennessee foes and improved their record to 4-1, 3-0 in region. The team’s bats were hot in Friday’s doubleheader and came away victorious against both Father Ryan and Harpeth Hall winning 13-1 and 12-0, respectively. Pope John Paul II hosted the Bruisers on Saturday and were shut out 4-0 to close out the weekend sweep by GPS.

Macie Stanfield led the Bruisers with eight hits and four RBIs, followed by Ariana Whatley, who collected six hits and three RBIs. Hannah Kincer, Haley Smith, and Shelby Walters all smashed homers for GPS.

The pitchers in Blue also padded their stats with Stanfield holding Father Ryan to only three hits and striking out four Irish. In the late game Friday, Kincer threw a one-hit shutout and punched out 12 batters on strikeouts to shut down Harpeth Hall. Walters also pitched a shutout versus JPII on Saturday, allowing only one hit and collecting 6Ks.

The Bruisers returned to the field Tuesday for a home game versus Chattanooga Central. Behind the stellar pitching of Kincer, who threw a one-hitter and struck out nine, the Bruisers shut down Central for a dramatic 7th inning victory. With Stanfield on second and two outs, Karly Benefield burned the left fielder to drive in the run and send the Pounders home.
