Grandparents and Special Friends Enjoy Morning at GPS

Annual event draws huge crowd of Middle School supporters
"Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children." Alex Haley, novelist

When a parent visits GPS during the school day, one usually senses a mission is underway—a meeting with a teacher, a conference with an administrator, or a volunteer task to be completed. However, when grandparents and special friends descend upon campus, a certain elevated level of anticipation, of pride and wonderment, permeates the spaces normally occupied by girls moving about their days.

As the Athletic Commons doors open to our esteemed guests—nearly 350 of them!—our students get pulled into hugs that only grandparents can get away with in public settings. These close friends and family members unapologetically gush about their girls, eagerly sharing tidbits such as, “She was pictured on the invitation!” and “This one is in the pirate play!”

Girls and their guests are welcomed by Head of Middle School Lynne Macziewski, then tour the halls, visit The Bow, see performances, and hear Head of School Dr. Autumn Graves talk about our values. They walk arm-in-arm, pause for photos, introduce friends, and point out the library, the Naiads, the Ben.

We get you, grandparents. We adore your girls, too, and every day we are astounded by not only what they can do but whom they have the potential to become. We see them reflected in your eyes. We know you see them, too. These young women come from good stuff and you, along with their parents, play a part in instilling in them a value system that will serve them long after they graduate from GPS. So, we celebrate you on Grandparents and Special Friends Day. We welcome you into our school and hope you find many reasons to return.
