GPS Students Excel at Statewide Math Contest

GPS students participating in the TMTA statewide high school math contest well represented the caliber of GPS's mathematics department.

On Tuesday, April 10, students from Tennessee public, private, and parochial high schools travel to testing locations in their respective cities to compete in the 62nd annual statewide high school mathematics contest sponsored by Tennessee Mathematics Teachers’ Association (TMTA). The purposes of the contest are (1) to stimulate interest in mathematics by encouraging more students to include mathematics in their programs of study and, thereby, to raise the level of mathematics competence in Tennessee; and (2) to honor those students who are outstanding in their knowledge of mathematics through appropriate public recognition in their schools and their communities, according to TMTA.

With competitors in five of the six divisions—Algebra I/Integrated I; Geometry/Integrated II; Algebra II/Integrated III; Pre-Calculus; Calculus and Advanced Topics; and the sixth, Statistics—GPS is represented well by the 25 students eager to test their knowledge, skills, and mastery of mathematics for preeminence in their region and state.

Highlights:
  • 14 of the 25 GPS students rank in the top 10 of their divisions (students may compete in only one division)
  • At least two GPS students place in the top 10 in all five of the divisions in which GPS competes
  • GPS girls account for almost all top 10 finishes by girls
  • Four of the five GPS girls who competed in Algebra I place in the top seven
  • Two GPS students finish in top three in Geometry
  • Two GPS girls place in top 10 in Algebra II
  • 50 percent of female contestants in Precalculus rank in top seven and three of those are GPS girls
  • In Calculus, 60 percent of girls who compete finish in the top 10, and the three girls to score in top 10 are from GPS
