GPS/McCallie Mission Remission 2019 is "SoundProof"
The seventh annual Mission Remission, a cancer awareness initiative and fundraising effort to support research for a cure, features a benefit concert headlined by a McCallie alumni musical group called SoundProof.
Girls Preparatory School and McCallie School present the seventh annual Mission Remission, a cancer awareness initiative and fundraising effort to support research for a cure.
Headlining this year’s Mission Remission is a benefit concert hosted by GPS on Saturday, February 9, at 7 p.m., starring Sound Proof, a musical group of 2013-14 McCallie alumni Chris Lee, Ethan Jones, and Matthew Mahfood. More than half of the proceeds from this concert will support research and cure development for childhood cancer.
Opening the show for Sound Proof is GPS/McCallie student band People of Clothing. Band members include Ellie Swann '19, Michael Arnold '20, Raif Gork '19, Jacob Gossett '20, Carter Hutcherson '20, Anderson White '20, and Grant Williams '20.
Following the concert will be an after-party in GPS Athletic Commons with music and concessions. This is also a time when attendees can meet and greet with the members of Sound Proof.
Mission Remission began in 2013 with an approximately 2.3-mile walk through downtown Chattanooga as an effort to raise cancer awareness. In addition, the two schools raised funds through pledges, donations, and T-shirt sales. Between 2013 and 2016, the model for Mission Remission remained similar. In 2017, it changed slightly as students from both schools gathered at McCallie to take a silent lap around the track and tie blue and white ribbons—the colors for cancer awareness—on the school’s gate that runs alongside McCallie Avenue. Tie-dyed socks were also sold.
Each year during the event’s opening, personal testimonies have been given by cancer survivors or those whose lives were influenced by someone with cancer. GPS and McCallie raised a total of $15,000 in its inaugural year and over the past six years in total $140,000 has been raised. Mission Remission has donated to The Christian Bryant Foundation; Children’s Hospital at Erlanger: Kennedy Outpatient Center; JoeDance, Joe Restaino’s Foundation (Charlotte, North Carolina), with funds designated to Levine Children’s Hospital for pediatric cancer research; Emily’s Power for a Cure, and more.
Along with the benefit concert, this year’s Mission Remission will hold additional awareness events in March; this benefit concert is the main fundraiser for cancer this year. GPS/McCallie’s mission is the remission of cancer.
